12:06 pm
pictures from the scene outside of the school. you can see just a lot of people standing there, some ambulances and cars and law enforcement and parents and teachers basically in shock about what happens. it happened at 9:44 this morning when a gunman walked into the school and opened fire. there was a call to 911 reporting the emergency and when police started to arrive at the scene. there were numerous children who heard what sounded like they said maybe some cans falling on the ground. they thought maybe the janitor had knocked something over and police came to the classroom and said is he in here and told them to get in a safe place and children were hiding in closets, various reports of real heroism on the part of not only teachers but students as well that made sure the friends were okay as they were escorted

out of the building. a small community, east of danburry, 45 miles away from hartford, connecticut and 60 miles away from new york city. the school itself has 826 students, kindergarten through 4th grade, young and there is reports of a possible connection between the suspected gunman, ryan lanza, apparently his mother was a teacher at the school and she is reportedly among the dead. we also heard that the gunman's younger brother being held for questioning and there's an active crime scene at that family's home nearby at the suspect's home, neighbors have been told to leave their homes and not have been allowed back in there. one neighbor told cnn, the only neighbor willing to talk described two brothers as troubled. again, that is just being reported from c nn. the area obviously was heavily

searched and police were checking to make sure there were no other shooters and we understand that the rest of the schools in the district on lock down for a time to make sure that there was no other concerns and no other problems and even some schools and surrounding districts were locked down. police looking through cars and had tape around one vehicle and investigators cornered off a red minivan and looking through that. at least 100 rounds fired, the shooting started in a school hallway and we do know that gunman was found dead in a classroom. at the scene, two handguns were recovered, including a rifle and a glauck. the students were led to a firehouse that was used as the staging area where parents could pick up the kids. they were relieved to find them

alive and agonizing way for other parents. grief counselors are there. for students you can see that one child clinging to her mother and distraught and completely traumatized and some got a call and some got e-mails and some got texts from the school informing them of the emergency. a small community, word spread extremely quickly. once again, a little more on the shooter identified as 24- year-old ryan lanza with bulletproof vest and wearing all black clothes. and again, he is dead at this point. waiting for president obama to speak and when he does start speaking we will bring that to you, right now we want to head in the newsroom, rob roth and i understand you have seen new video. >> well, torrey, we have been going through the video all through the morning and it's -- a lot of it is heart-wrenching,
12:10 pm
imagine parents getting news of the shooting and not sure if there child was involved and race to the school and tremendous emotion and when the children are left out and the pain of the parents whose children have not come out and people want answers and those answers are not coming so quickly. so there was a lot of -- [ no audio] hearing noises, hearing screams, apparently there was screams over the school intercom system that a couple of students reported hearing. of course children were -- when the police led the children out, they were instructed to cover their eyes so they wouldn't have to see too much. beyond the surviving of this,
12:11 pm
there's going to be a whole emotional syndrome that is going to play out, torrey, it is going to be a long road, i think. >> absolutely and actually we heard earlier, rob, from a parent that had a child who died at columbine back in colorado and also had a child that survived and she was in tears knowing the agony that these parents will go through for the rest of their lives as they come to terms with the tragedy. let's check in with paul chambers with more on some of the staff involved in the situation. paul. >> that's correct, toreey, getting more information as we speak. cnn is reporting that among the dead is the principal and the guidance counselor of sandy hook elementary school. we also no one of the other adults said to be the gunman's mother, ryan lanza, his mother is among the dead. we are told unconfirmed 27 people dead, that's including
12:12 pm
the gunman. and also about 18 of them were said to be children. once again we know that school is kindergarten to 4th grade, 626 students and this is a very close knit community. a town of 2,000, you got to understand that a lot people have rushed to the community trying to get their support and of course we will be hearing from the president and governor. two of the three people that were -- maybe four people, the gunman, his mother and the principal of the school and the guidance counselor have been accounted for and dead according to cn n. we are staying on top of this to bring you the latest as more schools develop. torrey. thank you, law enforcement officials telling associated press, the suspect in this connecticut school shooting, 24- year-old ryan lanza and his younger brother being held for questioning. i should qualify that ryan lanza not being held, he is
12:13 pm
dead but his younger brother being held for questioning as a possible second shooter and the law enforcement officials say the boy's mother, nancy lanza worked at the school as a teacher and we are hearing reports that she is among the dead. an official is saying that ryan lanza's girlfriend and another friend are missing in new jersey. we had heard earlier reports that a house in new jersey was being searched by law enforcement. this is an official speaking on anonymity and the suspect is dead from the gunshot wound. we heard that the gunman is dead but did not know how that death happened whether it was self-inflicted or the police actually shot him. again this official is speaking of the condition of anonymity because the source is not authorized to speak on the record about this developing
12:14 pm
criminal investigation. police obviously being very cautious about this and holding the cards close to the vest and not releasing official death told at this point as they are waiting for confirmation and letting family know exactly the fate of their loved ones. we do know some wounded taken to nearby hospitals, including danbury, connecticut. we are still waiting for the president to speak to give an update and we will hear from the governor of connecticut for the latest sig. the president is expected to make a statement at the white house briefing room. you can see the live reporters waiting to speak to him right now and we are going back to -- i'm sorry, is it rob roth? okay, we are going back to paul chambers for an update. >> we have to remember this is
12:15 pm
the 3rd time the president has had to deal with a mass shooting, he dealt with the one in west virginia and injured congresswoman gabrielle giffords. we do know that this incident started 9:40. this 24-year-old ryan lanza, the gunman in this situation, his mother's name is nancy lanza and also among the dead. that's the connection we heard that he has to the school. right now unconfirmed 27 people are dead, 18 of which are said to be students. now of course we do know that lanza is from new jersey and being searched by a dozen police officers at the time. we also know that his younger brother was also taken into custody at this time. he is said to be a person that is being questioned right now as a possible second gunman in
12:16 pm
this situation. there are reports that lanza had several weapons on his body at the time including a bullet- proof vest to keep himself safe. we're not sure how he died and we're not sure if it was self- inflicted or hit by officers. sandy hook elementary school is 626 students in a town of 2,000 people and it is about 6 on miles northeast of new york and about an hour drive outside of hartford. now, all of the family that was notified about the situation were notified via e-mails or text messaging from the school that is basically set up for these kinds of situations. once again, there is a lot of questions to be answered and hopefully we will be getting a lot of that to you as we find out and let's go to toreey in the studio with more. tory. >> thank you, paul and we are hearing some more from family members relaying what children told them about the shooting at sandy hook elementary school in
12:17 pm
new town connecticut. 6-year-old told his father he was in the classroom when a gunman burst in and shot the teacher, he grabbed his friends and ran out the door and now we are going to the white house. good afternoon. i spoke with governor malloy and f.b.i. director muller. i offered governor malloy my condolences on behalf of the nation and made it clear that he will have every single resource he needs to investigate this heinous crime and care for victims and families. we have investigated too many of these incidents and each time i hear the news i react not as the president but as with anybody else would as a parent. that was especially true today. i know there is not a parent in who doesn't feel the same
12:18 pm
overwhelming grief that i do. the majority of those that died today were children. beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and ten years old. they had their entire lives ahead of them, birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. among the fallen were teacher, men and women that devoted their lives helping children fulfill their dreams so our hearts are broken today. for the parents and grand parents and sisters and brothers of these little children and for the families
12:19 pm
of the adults that are lost. our hearts are broke an for the parents of the survivors as well, as blessed as they are to have their children home with them, but their innocence has been torn away from them and no words that will ooze the pain. as a cub we have been through this too many times. whether it is an law enforcement school in newton or a shopping mall in oregon or a temple in since or a movie theater in aurora or a street corner in chicago. these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods and these children are our children. we are going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this regardless of the politics. this evening michelle and i will do whatever parent will do, hug our children a little tighter and we will tell them
12:20 pm
that we love them and we'll remind each other how deeply we love one another. but there are families in connecticut that cannot do that tonight. and they need all of us right now. and our days to come, that community needs us to be at our best as americans and i will do everything in my power as president to help. because while nothing can fill the space of a lost child or loved one, all of us can extend a hand to those in need to remind them that we are there for them, that we are praying for them and that the love they felt for those they lost endures not just in their memories but also in ours. may god bless the memories of the victims and in the words of
12:21 pm
scripture, heal the broken hearted and bind up their wounds. >> we have been listening to a clearly emotional president obama speaking publicly about the mass shooting and the president speaking his condolences. he offered the governor of connecticut his deepest condolences and will offer every single resource that they can possibly need in order to expedite this investigation. the president also emphasissed we have endured too many tragedies and acting as a parent and paused as a moment wiping away tears of the victims five to ten years old and he said they had their entire lives ahead of them and
12:22 pm
expressed his deepest thoughts and sympathy for the teachers that dedicated their lives helping students and the ones that were killed. we need to take meaningful action to make sure this doesn't keep happening regardless of politics. he did not go into specifics and he knows that he and his wife will hug their children tighter and express their love for each other. the president has ordered flags to be ordered at half-staff in respect for the victims of the connecticut shootings. we do not have a confirmation but new reports from the associated press that number is 27 that have been killed that includes 18 to 20 children and the gunman also is among those dead.
12:23 pm
that total fatality number. we do understand the gunman has been identified as 24-year-old ryan lanza and he is the son of the teacher at that school, sandy hook elementary in newton and she is among the dead as well. and we do understand that lanza's younger brother now is among one of the suspects that is being questioned by police right now and their home has been surrounded by police and an active crime scene, let's check in with paul chambers for more information. paul. >> victoria among the dead is the principal and guidance counselor, also among the ones of the dead and reading reports of family members and one father talks about his child, 6 years old that grabbed his friend and ran out of the classroom and the gunman did not say a word and another man said that their child heard bangs and screaming over the intercom before the shooting and we caught up with one of
12:24 pm
the mothers that said her child saw gruesome things at today's site. >> my daughter was lock in a bathroom and kept her calm and told her there was hammering going on. this is what my daughter told me what happened and the next thing i know the police came in and they, i guess, knocked on the door and they left a student -- or my daughter and her teacher out and as my daughter was walking out she did see blood and glass. that's what her -- as much as she saw. but i got a call from the teacher that was wonderful enough to call me and let me know that my daughter was safe. >> a lot of teachers are being
12:25 pm
credited at heroes. this is december through 4th, 626 students in a small town of 2,000. a lot of troubling scenes, kids walking out and covering their eyes. we caught one one little girl at the scene and this is what she had to say. >> there was like police officers like down on the roof and there was also police officers in the hallways. >> what were they telling. >> not everything. >> they moved you. >> to the firehouse. and that's where all of the parents and everybody came. >> all of the kids were brave like you were. >> some of them were like agent scared but we had to go through. >> it how did you know they were scared. >> everybody was like crying and stuff. >> once again, we do know that has been reported that gunman
12:26 pm
is 24-year-old ryan lanza from new jersey and his mother was one of the ones dead and a teacher at the school and also the principal of the school and the guidance counselor at the school are dead. reporting 27 people dead, 18 of which are children, that is not confirmed yet by law enforcement officials because there is still notification for next of kin. two weapons were found on the gunman, ryan lanza who is dead and his body was left in the school as the school is being continued to be searched. we found out that there was another person found nearby the school in the woods and we believe that is ryan lanza's younger brother and in custody with police. they said when he walked out of the woods he looked at the parents and said i did not shoot anyone but as of right now he is also in custody right now. law enforcement is checking their new jersey home to see what other information they can get dealing with the event. paul chambers once again in
12:27 pm
the newsroom, thank you. a short time ago we saw president obama give a rather emotional brief statement and he says the statement has to come together to take meaningful act after this school shooting. he offered his deepest sympathy and condolences to the families, not only of the children of the families of the victims, the children that died but also of the children that survived knowing that their likes have been permanently changed and their innocence gone as well and pledging to give complete support to the governor and to all of the state and local law enforcement to make sure they have the resources they need to do a full investigation into the tragedy. he has ordered all flags to be at half-staff in honor of the victims right now of the connecticut shooting. again, there's still so many questions to be answered. we do know that law enforcement did comb the school thoroughly
12:28 pm
and looked in every nook and cranny to make sure they had every single area covered to make sure there was no other victims or weapons and no other suspects and once again we're waiting for the governor of connecticut to speak, governor daniel malloy, talking to the families of the victims, the parents, heart breakingly waiting for word on the status of the children, the ones not reunited. trauma over what their children have experienced during the tragedy today. we do understand that we have sound bytes from president obama when he spoke earlier talking about the situation that a lot parents are going through and what the country is going to have to to go through in the future. i know there's not a parent in america that doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that i do. the majority of the people that died today were children, beautiful little kids between

the ages of five and ten years old. they had their entire live ahead of them, birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. >> all right, once again that was president obama. earlier we heard that live but he certainly was quite emotional, something you don't see very often with the president. but obviously this is touched him deeply not just as the president but with a parent with two daughters in school right now. we want to go to paul chambers that has more information on the principal that is said to be one of the victims of the shooting this morning in connecticut. paul. >> that's correct, torey, the principal, the guidance counselor and one
